How to Tell Your Children You're Divorcing
Telling your children is one of the most difficult things any parent can do. This guide provides tips for parents who are planning that difficult conversation.
How to Tell Your Children You're Divorcing
Telling your children about your divorce is one of the most difficult conversations you'll ever have as a parent. While there is no perfect way to do it, there are steps you can take to help your children feel safe, loved, and supported during this transition.
Tell them sooner rather than later. Children often sense tension and change long before parents realize it. Waiting too long can increase their anxiety and leave them wondering if something even worse is happening. Once you've made the decision to divorce, it's generally best to tell your children as soon as possible.
Whenever possible, tell them together. Presenting a united front helps children feel more secure. Keep the message simple and reassuring. Let them know that the divorce is not their fault and that both parents love them.
Focus on what will stay the same and what may change. Children are naturally concerned about how the divorce will affect their daily lives. Share information about living arrangements, school, routines, and parenting schedules if you know it. If you don't have all the answers yet, it's okay to say so.
Invite questions and keep the conversation open. Some children will have lots of questions right away, while others may need time to process the information. Let them know they can come to you anytime and continue checking in with them over the coming days and weeks.
Protect children from adult issues. Children do not need to know who wanted the divorce, whether there was an affair, details about finances, alimony, or information that would require them to keep secrets from the other parent. These are adult issues that place an unnecessary burden on children.
Your children need to hear three things:
This is not your fault.
Both of your parents love you.
We will continue to take care of you.
While divorce is a major change, children are remarkably resilient when they feel loved, supported, informed, and emotionally safe.
